Olhares Periféricos

Articulação, pesquisa, formação e revista

O conceito

Virou o maior trunfo do projeto.

Elementos
Virou o maior trunfo do projeto.

Olhares Periféricos

Articulation, research, training and magazine

The concept

Data is also narrative. Whoever designs the page decides how a community will be read.

A collective research project on Black and peripheral art in the Baixada Santista region. I did the design and edited the magazine with the assistance of João Pedro (Xamppu) and Jéssika Chendi.

The research was produced from the inside, through citizen-generated data. We gave classes and training so the artists could research their own territory.

Cultural articulation and mobilization, carried out by the project team, brought almost 300 people together in person. Students, cultural agents, government secretaries and partners from abroad burst the bubble.

There was invisible work, lack of funding and a team that kept shrinking. The turning point came with the August immersions, when three people carried the project to the end.

The magazine was not in the scope. As its editor, I wanted it faithful to the words of the street, and that was only possible because I live in this territory. It became the project’s biggest asset.

Elements
Cultural articulationArticulation means getting different people to sit together. University, cultural agents, government and partners from abroad joined the same conversation about Black and peripheral art.
Cultural mobilizationAlmost 300 people, in person. Mobilizing meant taking the research to gatherings and face to face conversations instead of leaving it sitting on a form.
Research productionWe produced the research collectively, with the people who live and create in the territory. I am from here too, and having lived this ground is what kept the material faithful to the words of the street.
Citizen-generated dataWhoever maps decides what exists. Since the artists produced the data themselves, the graphic project started from that authorship, not from an outside view of the territory.
Classes and trainingBefore researching, we trained. The classes on research gave artists tools to gather data about their own territory, and the sessions were recorded and published.
MagazineThe magazine was not even in the scope. As art director and editor, I took the research out of the spreadsheet and gave it a body, with numbers and portraits on the same page. It became the project’s biggest asset.
